Not Proud

Okay, I admit it, sometimes I feed my toddler mac n' cheese for dinner. No, I never feel good about it, but sometimes, it just has to be. For some reason, though, I don't think she minds.

Is she looking a little too grown up to anyone else?

Santa Barbara

A weekend ago, we headed up to Santa Barbara. What a beautiful city. We had planned to camp, but instead we heated up our freeze dried camp dinners with the Jet Boil in a Motel 6. It was super fun; including the morning dip in an unheated pool in 65 degree weather. There is just something about sleeping in a bed that someone else is going to make up when you leave.

Unfortunately we did not meet any psychic detectives on our trip which only would have made it more awesome. We did, however, drive by the police department in the beautiful downtown district and visit a butterfly sanctuary which was phenomenal and enough to convince me that we, and our entire extended families, should move to Santa Barbara.

Maggie's favorite part of the the sanctuary (which, by the way, opens up to beautiful fields and a huge bluff overlooking the ocean) was "washing" rocks, sticks, and grass in a large mud puddle. That, and just having room to run and run and run and run. She also liked the dogs (pets, of course). Didn't seem too interested in the butterflies which would get startled by the dogs, and leave the trees to fill the air by the thousands. Too bad I took about 100 blurry pictures of this place. It really was beautiful.

We also visited the Santa Barbara zoo which is home to the world's largest breed of rodent (ROUS's anyone?). These ones don't have tails and they like to poop in the water and then swim (with their large floating turds, sorry, gross!) and are some of the smelliest creatures I have ever experienced. Obviously, though, they fascinated me. The zoo is very nice; Maggie was fascinated with the alligator that did not move for our entire visit. She walked around the zoo clapping her arms together and saying "snap, snap." Perhaps she was trying to inspire him, or perhaps she was trying to figure out how on earth that rock could ever say, "snap." I sure wish I could get inside a toddler's head sometimes. Either way, one thing I know, is that sure I love a good vacation.
